Antenna Space is pleased to announce our joint participation with Project Native Informant at Frieze Seoul 2023. At booth A31, Antenna Space will present works by artists Guan Xiao and Owen Fu, alongside Project Native Informant’s presentation of artists Anna Jung Seo, Joseph Yaeger and Kenneth Bergfeld.

In this exhibition, Owen Fu presents a subtle transformation and fusion of his artistic practice, transitioning from brushwork and expression that leans more towards Western art to a visual style rich in Eastern charm and texture. In his paintings, he frequently portrays hidden desires and “Geisttiere that dwell in the void” in his artworks. The vacant depths of eyes in his works symbolize unknown time and desires, while the lines metaphorically convey entangled relationships and sentiments. Each of these elements resonates deeply, evoking a sense of profound emotional connection. Gazing into indescribable eyes, images of well-known folk stories, songs and poems are invoked – such as “The Butterfly Lovers,” “Butterflies Loves Flowers,” “Night Rain: Sent North” about trimming the candle by the western window. These elements form a bittersweet and melancholic emotional experience, summoning a “beast of the heart” within desire. Simultaneously, the direct application of pigments onto coarse linen corresponds to the traditional Chinese practice of painting in ink on paper, furthering reminiscence of traditional Chinese art.

오웬 푸의 (Owen Fu) 작품은 서양 미술 특성이 도드라진 붓놀림와 표현력에서 동양적 멋과 질감을 느낄 수 있는 시각적 미학으로의 양식의 변화를 보여줌으로써 작가의 창작 활동의 섬세한 변화와 융합을 선보입니다. 그의 작품에서 종종 등장하는 주제인 암울한 욕망과 ‘공허한 심수’를 묘사하는데 있어서 작품 속 눈 밑의 공허함은 미지의 시공간과 욕망을 상징하고, 선은 갈등관계와 감정을 은유적으로 표현합니다. 형언할 수 없는 눈빛에서 우리는 ‘무제’에 담긴 ‘양축’(梁祝), ‘접련화’(蝶恋花), ‘서창촉’(西窗烛) 등 저명한 중국 민담, 민요, 시조를 연상할 수 있는데, 이 요소들은 씁쓸하고 슬픈 감정을 끌어올려 욕망 속 ‘심수(心兽)’를 강하게 불러일으킵니다. 동시에 거친 질감의 린넨 소재에 물감을 칠하는 것은 선지에 수묵으로 그림을 그린 중국의 전통 방식을 반영하며 이로 전통 회화의 정취를 더했습니다.

Guan Xiao creates a visual language that breaks through historical and cultural boundaries by establishing diverse relationships between a variety of rich materials, using collage to fuse classical art language with industrial manufacturing civilization to build a unique form of contemporary art. Ceramic is a traditional material that is soft and varied in character to Guan Xiao. It represents the “old”, in opposition to industrialized sharpness, precision and repeatability. The imagery of the eye and portrait makes the use of the rim more explicit. After it is transformed into eyes, the radial structure becomes more intense and gives different emotions. A protruding ceramic nose, along with jet rims constitute an ever-shifting abstract portrait due to the variability of the rim style and the material color of the nose.

관 샤오은 (Guan Xiao) 다양한 재료 사이의 서로 다른 관계를 구축하여 역사와 문화의 경계를 뛰어넘는 시각 언어를 창조하고, 콜라주를 이용하여 고전 예술 언어와 산업 제조 문명을 융합하여 독특한 형태의 현대 예술 작품을 선보입니다. 도자기는 고전적인 아름다움을 지닌 전통적인 재료로 부드럽고 변형시킬 수 있는게 특징이며 산업화의 날카로움, 정확성 및 반복성과 대립되는 일종의 ‘옛’ 것을 나타냅니다. 눈과 초상화의 이미지는 림의 사용을 더욱 명확하게 만듭니다. 눈으로 변환된 후, 방사형 구조는 더욱 강력해지고 다양한 감정을 줍니다. 타이어 스타일과 코의 소재 색상의 다변성으로 인해 하나의 볼록한 세라믹 코와 두 개의 어두운 휠이 끊임없이 변화하는 추상적인 초상화를 형성합니다.
