BIOGRAPHY
Carolyn Forrester (b.1993, New York) currently lives and works in New York. She received a B.A. from Yale University in 2015 and an MFA from the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting, MICA, in 2020.
Carolyn Forrester’s paintings overlap sites of speculation, fraudulence and illusion. Speculation, in particular, Forrester is interested in for its multiple meanings as a pattern of thought and as an activity of the contemporary market that structures our world. Her paintings incorporate collaged photographs and source material pulled from news coverage and popular culture around themes of conspiracy and technological mediation, such as The X-Files and The Matrix. She distorts and dissolves these source images into marks, utilizing ‘faux-pointillist’ techniques; she is also keen on pointillism for its postulation of an underlying structure of vision, but which she uses here evacuated of its grounding theories and more as a ‘stylistic readymade’ for approaching the problem of resolution. The resultant paintings are dense systems of information and belief, hallucinatory color landscapes that resist the easy coherence and syntactical clarity we expect of an image.
