Hanna Hur

    BIOGRAPHY

Hanna Hur (b.1985, Toronto) lives and works in New York. Hur received an MFA from University of California, Los Angeles in 2019.

Hanna Hur’s artistic practice constructs transcendent visual fields through geometric precision, spanning painting, drawing, and sculpture forms. Her works are intricate yet evanescent, resembling hallucinatory visual identifications or spectral abstract constructions, guiding viewers into a meditative state as if participating in a specific ritual, thereby forming a unique “rational mysticism.” Her creations often rest upon repetitive labor, manifesting in meticulous grid construction in her paintings or the handwoven of copper chainmail sculptures over years, transforming time and sanctity into visible material traces.

Recent solo exhibitions include: 8, Doosan Art Center, Seoul (2024); Lost Thing, Dracula’s Revenge, New York (2024); Two Angels & Red Ecstatic, Kristina Kite, Los Angeles (2023, 2021); Fortune Baby God’s Eyes, Feuilleton, Los Angeles (2020); Signal at the Wheel, Hover at the Gate, Bel Ami, Los Angeles (2019).

She has participated in group exhibitions at various venues, including Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2025, 2022), CAPC Bordeaux, Bordeaux (2024), Aspen Art Museum, Aspen (2022), and Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2021). Hur’s work is held in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among others. Upcoming exhibitions include Made in L.A. at the Hammer Museum and a solo exhibition at Sweetwater in Berlin.
