Han Bing is to exhibit a series of new paintings at her solo exhibition Facades And Waves featured at Night Gallery. This will be her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

Han Bing’s painting practice is informed by the daily experience of walking through cityscapes, construction sites and architectural exteriors.
Often reconstructed from the arbitrary and unpredictable forms that develop in industrial residues, the shapes and textures in her paintings are accumulated in layers between transparent and opaque marks, and then sealed with pronounced, defined edges. In this process, building facades and surface treatments become flat, foundational planes, interrupted by gestures alluding to moments of half-glimpsed commercials and torn advertisements.

Using a borrowed language of postering and de-postering, the interruption of the initial surfaces she creates is itself used as a reforming tool for abstraction. The hum of construction audible from sidewalks and the flurry of machinery and dirt typically hidden by scaffolding are approached through formal means, built into human-scale canvases that are slightly, uncannily offset from being familiar.

Han Bing was born in Shandong, China, in 1986. She received a MFA from Parsons the New School of Design, New York, and also holds a MFA and a BFA from Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. She has had two solo exhibitions with Antenna Space in Shanghai, and is currently based in New York.
